MirOS BSD

March 17th, 2008 • Category: bsd

MirOS BSDMirOS BSD is a secure, desktop-oriented operating system from the BSD family for 32-bit i386 and sparc systems. It is based on 4.4BSD-Lite (mostly OpenBSD, some NetBSDĀ®). MirOS BSD is one of the new BSD-based distros intent on improving the user experience of a BSD operating system, and making it more appealing for new users.

Origin – Home Page: Germany – MirOS BSD

Desktop: There is no truly, user-friendly desktop after installation. You’ll have to get your hands dirty to get a usable desktop.

Price: Free and Open Source

Comments: MirOS BSD, like openBSD that it is partly based upon, uses a text-based installer; no fancy GUI installers here. If you have installed openBSD, you will feel right at home installing MirOS BSD. However, unlike openBSD, MirOS BSD does not use the traditional root user system. Instead, every user created can use sudo to gain admin privileges.

As mentioned above, the system does not reboot into a graphical desktop after installation. You will find yourself staring at a console screen, but typing sudo startx will give you a not so friendly, TWM desktop. You will have to dig into some configuration files to get a truly usable desktop environment.
