Tweak Pear Linux Comice OS 4 dock

Some tasks in Linux are so easy to do that you think writing a tutorial about them would be a waste of time, until you start seeing significant search traffic related to them. That is what prompted this very brief tutorial.

And it is all about the Dock in Pear Linux Comice OS 4, a desktop-centric distribution based on Ubuntu Desktop that was recently reviewed on this website (see Pear Linux Comice OS 4 review).

A distinguishing feature of the Comice OS 4 desktop is the Dock, which is powered by Docky. By default, it is always visible, but it can be tweaked to auto-hide and reappear on mouseover. This tutorial shows how it is done.

As stated earlier, it is very easy to do and the way to get started is by right-clicking on the Dock itself as shown in the screen shot below. Select Settings from the context menu that appears.

That should open the Settings window. Under Dock Configuration, you will see that the default value in the Hiding dropdown menu is “None.” The options in that menu control the visibility of the Dock. “None” means that it will be always visible. If you are reading this, you probably want to change it.

To do that, click on the Hiding dropdown menu and you will see the other options. “Autohide” will cause the Dock to disappear, until you mouseover the area that it usually occupies. Then it magically reappears. “Intellihide” and “Window Dodge” produce almost the same effect: The dock will be visible until you open an application whose window covers the whole desktop. In that case, the Dock will disappear and only rears its head when you mouseover the Dock area. That does it for this tutorial.

Cairo-Dock also has such a great feature; the strange thing is that Unity has dropped it !
